At MHVH we use a two-step protocol for humane euthanasia. Pet parents and family are welcome to stay with their pet for all, part or none of the process. Everyone handles grief and loss differently and there is no shame in how you choose to proceed through this moment. 

The first injection is solely sedation. This is given in the muscle, typically of a hind leg, and like with all needle administrations, this injection can sting. However, the goal in giving this first injection, is that after roughly 10 minutes, the pet will be sleepy and not feel the second injection. Our staff will leave and let you have this time with your pet alone. 

We will then come back for the final injection. This medication will be given in a vein and stops the heart and all other bodily processes. The veterinarian will confirm that the pet has passed, and owners are welcome to spend additional time with the pet, if they wish. 

Following humane euthanasia, we offer clay paw prints free of charge if requested. We can also remove fur or make an ink nose or paw print as well. We offer cremation services through a local pet crematory. Ashes can be returned to the owner or not; this process can take 7-10 days. Owners may also take their pet for at-home burial.
